Subject: 9k6 mods for IC-471

A friend of mine is trying to make a MFJ 9600 baud modem work with his
IC-471.  He has figured out how to get the receive audio, but he can't
find where to put the TX audio.  He tried tapping directly to the varactor,
but that kills his power output.

There is supposedly a mod somewhere for this.  If you have it (or know where
it is) could you please mail it (or its address) to me?

Subject: 9k6 w/ Tekk Radios

Has anybody tried using the cheap (~$100) Tekk radios at 9600 baud?  The ARC
here is thinking of going that way, and we need information on mods required,
performance, etc.

The low power output is OK for application because we are only hopping about
20 miles, and we can use a beam.

Please e-mail replies, because I don't usually read this group.

Subject: Cable channel 18..

In San Diego, Cox Cable shows The Disney Channel on 18.  I was first
aware of my interfering with the channel last month when Disney went free
for a weekend.  I informed Cox of the interference, including the fact
that I caused it, and they stood firm on a defective television receiver.

Unfortunately for Cox, I have THREE televisions connected, and they all
experienced my transmission (on several frequencies throughout the 2m
band).  Cox then surmised I had a "dirty" radio, but I didn't think I'd
bought TWO dirty radios from different makers.

The following Monday, Cox was at my telephone pole inspecting the
connection.  I walked out to talk to the tech, and tuned to 145.25 (as
mentioned in Arron Smith's message), and he found an unterminated output
on the line amp.

There still is some interference, but it's been greatly reduced, and only
the nearest TV gets mucked up when I transmit.

I will now collect my pennies and go home.

Subject: CDE antenna rotor

Hi,
    I bought a CDE antenna rotor at a hamfest last year. The rotor is
fine but the controller seems to be flaky when I try to point the antenna
between N and West. Here are the details from the back of the controller.

    Model AR-33    115 V.A.C
    60 cycle       1 Amp
    Mfd by
    Cornell-Dubilier
    Electronics Div.
    Federal Pacific Electric Co.
    Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina.
    Patent No. 3.043,998

    Series 1820.

    The terminal strip has 5 wires. If anybody has a copy of the schematics
of the controller I'd like to get a copy of it. Could some knowledgeable soul
explain how the 5 wire system works. I opened the controller and the
position dial is nice wire wound resistor of 1K ohm resistance which has
been hooked up as a variable resistor and not a potential devider. There is
a large capacitor across terminal 1 and 5. There is a transfromer with a
center tapped secondary. The outer terminals are connected to terminals 2 and 4.
Voltage between one of the outer terminals and the center tap is 14.2 volts.
The center tap is connected to a ground trace on the circuit board.

    Is the controller setup as a bridge where the dial in the controller
is one of the arm and a similar dial up in the rotor is the other arm.
The rotor stops moving when the 2 arm gets balanced. Any information will be
of great help

Not to mention if they're in a low enough orbit, hams around the world might
take shots at 'em!!! ;-)

WARC has allocated 28.0-29.7 to amateurs in ALL THREE regions.  That's a big
population compared to any power Bill Gates might have.  Somebody should
take him down a notch or two.

Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. on April 1, 1994).

CONNECTICUT HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION TAKES FIRST STEP TO STOP
DISCRIMINATION AGAINST GAY HAM RADIO CLUB

(New York, NY, April 1, 1994)  In one of its first rulings under
Connecticut's law against sexual orientation, the Connecticut
Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities announced that it
had reasonable cause to believe that the American Relay League
(ARRL) had discriminated against a gay ham radio club when it
refused to publish the gay club's notices in its classified
advertising section.

     In its March 18 decision in a case brought by Lambda Legal
Defense and Education Fund, the Commission affirmed the case
investigator's finding that ARRL's refusal to publish the Lambda
Amateur Radio Club (LARC) ad was motivated by the club member's
sexual orientation. Rejecting the ARRL's defense that it excluded
LARC's ad because the group is "issue oriented," the Commission
held that "the issue in this instance is clearly the fact that
LARC's members identify themselves as Gay."

     "The Commission's ruling illustrates that Connecticut's law
against sexual orientation discrimination will be a significant
tool in stopping anti-gay acts," said Lambda staff attorney
Suzanne Goldberg who represents the club along with Robert G.
Miller, John Lynch and Catherine McGrath of the New York law firm
Brown Raysman & Millstein.

     While the ARRL has refused to publish LARC's ad for nearly
ten years, it has continued to publish classified advertisements
for other ham radio clubs including Jehovah's Witnesses, Ayn Rand
enthusiasts, missionaries and animal rights groups. "The ruling
is an important first step toward achieving just treatment for
the Lambda Amateur Radio Club," said Goldberg.

     "It is time for responsible individuals at the ARRL to
publicly acknowledge the unfairness of their past practices,
adopt and publish a non-discrimination policy which includes
sexual orientation, and to work with LARC in the spirit of
cooperation and good will which has always characterized the
amateur radio service," said LARC president James Kelly.

     A full hearing on the case is scheduled for June.

advance the rights of lesbians, gay men, and people with

I have also looked for the DC connector but could not find it from any
supplier.  I finally called Yeasu and they sell a DC connector (molded with
90 degrees elbow) with a 6' length of cable...with nothing at the other
end.  The part number is E-DC-5A and it sells for 6$ US.  It is expensive
but it is the only way you can power you radio with an external supply...
I ordered only one of these installed a connector at the end of the cable
and use it at home with a power supply and in the car with a lighter
adapter...

I've been listening to both 75 and 40 for some time and I'm amazed by
the informal bad grammar that seems to be completely normal to the
user.

For example when he saw something last week, " Well I see it last time too"
The word doesn't dosen't exit, " He don't need a new michrophone"

What ever happened when these people learned? English!
Ofcourse, you can tell right away that these guys aren't too well
educated. But, I'm still wondering how such poor English can be acquired
when almost all broadcasting and newpapers does not indulge in such
flights of misuse.

It is said that in the USA WE SPEAK ENGLISH...  well, I've heard some
JAs and many Eurpeans do better with English as a second and third
language as 60% of American hams can do with it as their first.

I just got some news that a club member just got his ticket
in 8 wks, 1 day.  Concord session of Feb. 6 which he says
went to the Sunnyvale VEC.  I wonder if the ARRL is incubating
their applications a bit more than 97.519(b) specifies.....

I am waiting for my upgrade, and it's been 11+ weeks now.  Another
checkpoint is in the system... silicon valley VEC -- we'll see
how fast that turns around....

In an effort to speed the process, the ARRL has enlisted the aid of local
repeater groups to process the applications. Your application has been
given to the well known Road Island One Hurts repeater club.

We are all aware of the high standards that this group requires of its
membership. They have read your recent postings in reguards to intermod
and found them well beyond the scope of an amateur advanced class licence
holder. They hope to schedual your four hour oral exam in the next
several days.        It pays to pick your VEC vary carefully  ;)
